Signs Your Diamonds Need to Be Cleaned
Diamonds are beautiful and delicate, so it’s important to take care of them. While these gemstones are incredibly durable, dirt and oils can still build up over time, and exposure to direct sunlight, water, and chemicals can also cause wear and tear.
If you’re wondering if it’s time to give your diamonds a good cleaning, consider these signs.
They Don't Sparkle Like They Used To
If the sparkle of your diamond jewelry isn’t as brilliant as it used to be, then it may need a deep cleaning. Dirt and debris can get stuck on the surface of your diamonds and dull their appearance or give it a clouded look.
You may also note changes to the shine or luster of your piece, which can indicate dirt build-up that needs to be cleaned. Diamonds have an affinity for grease and oils. This means that hand lotion and skin oils will easily stick to your diamond, affecting their luster.
The Color Is Off
In most cases, diamonds are close to clear in color when they’re clean and free of any impurities or buildup. If you notice that your diamond has taken on a yellow, gray, or brown color, it’s likely time for a cleaning.
Your Stone Feels Gritty
If your diamond has become covered in dirt and oils, you might feel a gritty texture when running your finger across the surface of the gemstone. This is another good sign that it’s time to give your diamond a good cleaning.
How to Clean Your Diamonds and Diamond Jewelry At Home
We strongly recommend bringing your diamonds and diamond jewelry to a trusted jeweler for a professional cleaning. This is the best way to ensure that your jewelry is properly cleaned and cared for.
However, if you’d like to give your diamonds a light cleaning at home, here’s how you can do it.
Gather the Right Materials
If you want to clean your diamond jewelry at home, you will need lukewarm water (not hot), mild dish soap, a soft bristle brush or rag, and a soft cloth. Commercial jewelry cleaning liquid is fine to use on gold jewelry with diamonds, rubies or sapphires. Never soak pearls, emeralds, or other gemstones in these commercial cleaning solutions, as it will ruin the stones.
Create a Soapy Mixture
Mix a few drops of mild dish soap in lukewarm water. It is important to use a mild soap or detergent to avoid damaging the metal of your jewelry or leaving scum on your diamonds.
Soak Your Diamonds and Jewelry
Soak your diamond jewelry in the soapy mixture for 5-10 minutes, depending on the amount of dirt, dust, and grime that needs to be removed.
Use a Soft Bristle Brush
Take your diamond jewelry out of the soapy mixture and gently scrub it with a soft bristle brush. Do not use too much pressure when brushing – be gentle!
Rinse Your Diamonds and Jewelry
Once you’ve scrubbed the dirt away, rinse your diamond jewelry off in lukewarm water. You'll want to be sure you remove any remaining soap residue before drying it off.
Pat Dry with a Soft Cloth
Gently pat the diamond jewelry dry with a soft cloth and allow it to air dry completely before you wear it or put it away.
Store Your Diamond Jewelry
When you aren't wearing it, store your diamond jewelry safely in a lined box to keep it from getting scratched and damaged. Taking steps to protect your pieces when you aren't wearing them can help keep them looking beautiful for years to come.
Never put pieces with larger diamonds in the same area. The only thing that can scratch a diamond is another diamond. Therefore, it is best to store pieces in jewelry boxes that have compartments that separate the pieces. You can also store individually in poly bags or the original box that the item came in.
